Existence and Experience

SOYVA was formed in May 2010 and has been operating for the last 15 years majorly implementing programs that empowers the youth, women and vulnerable communities.These programs include humanitarian response, protection, SGBV and gender mainstreaming, education, climate change, health,wash, peace, livelihood and economic resilience business development, security and governance as well political inclusion of women and young people in supporting transformative gender inclusive governance.

SOYVA’s strategic focus is on making progress towards Community resilience through meeting people’s humanitarian as well as recovery needs from conflict and climate shocks through innovative and sustainable livelihood, addressing the special needs of youth, women and PWDs, minority and marginalized communities and IDPs; boosting access to social services, advocating for political and economic inclusion of women and youth, promoting democratic governance as well as improving the position of women and youth in the society.

SOYVA has a strong field presence with 19 full time and part time staff (10 male and 9 females) Spread between our main office in Baidoa and other operational areas of Mogadishu, Beledweyne,Jowhar,Galkacyo and Gedo regions. The staffs are supported by well dedicated SOYVA members and volunteers of over 3000 spread in various community settings and regions to act as mobilizers, camera men and conveners during activities. This is in addition to volunteer community structures such as SOYVA-youth voice of action teams in Baidoa, Puntland volunteer girls for action team and SOYVA Youth sports in Mogaidshu and Jowhar,VSLA Association in Gedo and Beledweyne, community-based response team who are in various communities spread across South and Central Somalia.

Many of the projects Implemented by SOYVA with support from donor partners were geared towards peace and reconciliation, education, emergence response, health, livelihood and economic empowerment, women/youth Empowerment and Gender Equality in Crisis Prevention and Recovery. The scope of these projects and the opportunities generated through them have had direct impact on vulnerable communities, youth/women’s ability to negotiate their ways through national processes, which is a precondition for inclusive and equitable peacebuilding and state-building, right to health, livelihood and protection as well as political inclusion including Constitutional review processes, state formation, dialogues on Federalism, reconciliation and electoral processes.

The gains made through these projects implemented by SOYVA on the emerging processes in Somalia, were aimed at having multipliers effect facilitating longer-term change in the culture of Violence, politics, policy and law-making across the country. Project gains have also impacted upon broader protections for women and girls from GBV and harmful traditional practices such as FGM and child marriages.

Education and economic empowerment opportunities through Entrepreneurship and savings association trainings have had a strong correlation to women’s empowerment in other areas such as women’s decision making in the family, community, and engagement by women in governance and democratization processes.

Through partnership with UNHABITAT, Electoral institute for sustainable democracy in Africa(EISA) , UNFPA, AMISOM, FBA and line Ministries , SOYVA has been instrumental in conducting ,workshops, forums, focused group discussion, Advocacy campaigns and seminars on good governance, Entrepreneurship, peace building and reconciliation, Counter violence initiatives, gender equality, credible election, Women right protection, Federalism process, SGBV awareness for women and girls, wash programs, health and talent for livelihood development among youth/women in South and central Somalia.
