8-Gender Empowerment

Crises have a disproportionate effect on women, who care for their children and households, farms and businesses – but are often marginalized in decisions that affect their lives. Women make up the majority of those who die in natural disasters and suffer the brunt of violence without interventions for livelihood and resilience. Crises exacerbate existing gender inequalities and pre-existing vulnerabilities in women who are at increased risk during conflicts when rape may be used as a weapon of war. Our humanitarian efforts have a distinct gender focus – this doesn’t mean we only give attention to women and girls, it simply means we recognize that their needs, and strengths, are different from those of men and boys. We purpose to bolster their roles in Livelihood, economics, politics and governance to reduce their exclusion and eventually counter the widespread prevailing gender inequalities across Somali society.
